Recently Completed and Current Projects of National Importance

"Relying on rain fed agriculture to feed a nation of 63 million people is like trying to catch a cloud in the sky. Hoping to feed 100 million Ethiopians by the year 2015 by relying solely on rain fed agriculture is sheer madness," says one of Ethiopia's most respected Engineers, Ato Tadesse H/Selassie of Berta Construction. EACE-AAU Ist Int'l Conf on Earthquake Engg, Structures, Transportation and Geotechnical Engg. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - [2003].

Some major construction projects planned since Emperor H/Selassie days are now finally finding funds. Where does the funding come from?  Why the funding now? Who gets the credit and the benefit? Is the country benefiting? To find answers to these and similar questions, MediaETHIOPIA has been talking to engineers, journalists and economists. In this issue, Dr. Lulseged Ayalew, a geologists currently working overseas writes about the many hydroelectric potentials in the country. He also raises concerns that not enough preparations have been made to address long-term issues such as siltation that have made even existing dams like the Koka unreliable. Article. This page is designed to be a source of information on structural, mechanical, water resources, construction and software engineering practices in Ethiopia. EthCITA (Ethiopian Computing and Information Technology Association, Inc.) has initiated a project as part of its plan for 2001-2003 to build online resources that are of significant interest to the various engineering communities in Ethiopia and abroad who are directly involved in projects, policy-making and research.

The project will concentrate on the above areas at the beginning and will eventually encompass other areas of engineering.
